Description

The Sword in the Stone Archimedes Production Cel (Walt Disney, 1963). This original production cel spotlights Archimedes, the highly educated owl from Walt Disney Productions' The Sword in the Stone (1963), the studio's 18th animated feature. Directed by Disney Legend Woolie Reitherman with a story adapted by Disney Legend Bill Peet, the film follows orphan Arthur (Wart) under Merlin's eccentric tutelage, culminating in the fabled pulling of the Sword in the Stone. Here, Archimedes is hilariously captured shaking water from his feathers, a moment seen near the 37:25 timestamp. The approximately 4" figure is hand-painted on 16-field acetate, and a separate hand-painted FX cel overlays the scene with flying droplets, adding lively motion. The cel is paired with a color print background and attractively matted to 20" x 16" for immediate display. Voiced by Junius Matthews and animated by Disney Legend Ollie Johnston (one of "Walt's Nine Old Men"), Archimedes is Merlin's sharp-tongued, scholarly companion-grouchy at dawn, pompous in principle, yet loyal to Merlin and ultimately fond of Arthur. A delightful setup from a classic sequence. Condition is Very Good.
