The Sinking of the Lusitania Production Cel (Winsor McCay, 1918). A stunning hand-inked and hand-painted production cel by McCay, from his 1918 film -- one of the first to use acetate or cels. It was his follow up film to the groundbreaking Gertie the Dinosaur, inspired by the sinking of the RMS Lusitania by a German U-boat, an act that killed 1,200 people and helped trigger World War I. Originally a noted illustrator, McCay created ten animated features during 1911-1921, and is considered the father of animated film. He financed this short with his own money, and drew its frames on more than 25,000 sheets of acetate in India ink at his home, over a two-year period. The piece is inscribed "this is one of my original drawings/Winsor McCay", and is matted and framed to 19" x 16.5". This is a rare piece of history and fine art, and it is in Fine condition.
