Description
The Ruff and Reddy Show Reddy Trimmed Production Cels and Studio Model Sheet Print Group of 3 (Hanna-Barbera, c. 1957-60). Reddy the Dog is ready for his close-up, in this group of two rare hand-inked, hand-painted production cels and an original studio-used model sheet print. The Ruff and Reddy Show, a "buddy" series about a cat and dog, was the first series produced by Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera after they left the MGM animation studio, where they produced 114 Tom and Jerry theatrical shorts. Higher costs were the number one reason theatrical shorts were on the decline; MGM had decided to start reissuing older cartoons rather that create new ones (a decision they later reversed when they hired Gene Deitch, and later Chuck Jones to produce more Tom and Jerry shorts). With a much tighter budget to work with, Bill and Joe pioneered the "limited animation" technique for this series, one of the very first animated programs made for television. The series ran for three seasons, and helped to launch the powerhouse H-B Studios. One of the cels features a full-figure image of Reddy, measuring approximately 2.75" x 5.5"; the other cel of Reddy with a shovel has an image size of 4" x 5". Both are in 7" x 9" mats with 4" x 6" openings. Also included is a Reddy model sheet, printed on photographic paper, and dated March, 1958; it includes seven images of Reddy (with more cut off along the right edge), plus one of his pal Ruff for size comparison. The model sheet is in Good condition with handling, edge wear, and age-related paper toning. The trimmed cels are in Good to Very Good condition with some wear, a small area of missing paint on the shovel handle, and wear to the inking lines.Auction Info
