Description

The Heckling Hare Bugs Bunny Production Cel (Warner Brothers, 1941). "Umm...what's up, Doc?" Bugs Bunny peers over the edge of a hole in the ground at dim-witted hunting dog Willoughby, who is on a futile search for a rabbit to catch. Undeterred by the dog's determination, Bugs knows that he has the upper hand because of his smarts. He taunts the dog by idly sitting by and observing Willoughby's fruitless efforts. The unintelligent hunting dog doesn't even realize that the rabbit talking to him is the very same rabbit he's hunting! This brilliant original, hand-painted, hand-inked production cel amazingly catches Bugs Bunny holding a half-eaten carrot right in the middle of the delivery of his most iconic line: "What's up, Doc?" This image comes from the 1:31 mark of the 1941 Warner Brothers short The Heckling Hare. This Merrie Melodies short is historic for several reasons. It marks only the fifth appearance of the named Bugs Bunny. The short was also animated by Robert McKimson, who would go on to refine Bugs Bunny's look and create the longest-lasting version of the rabbit that we're used to seeing today. Finally, this was the short that led to director Tex Avery's departure from Warner Brothers, as he was suspended after a dispute with Leon Schlesinger about the ending of the cartoon and soon took up a position at MGM. Bugs Bunny's almost full-figure image measures about 4.25" x 4.5" on a cel trimmed to 6" x 9.5". The cel is matted, with a matboard aperture measuring 5.75" x 9" and an overall mat size of 10.5" x 13.75". This incredible piece comes with a rare Warner Brothers Vintage Art Collection Certificate of Authenticity. The cel is in Very Good condition, with very minor handling and edge wear, as well as minor cel rippling.
