Description

The Hangman RARE Production Cel with Key Master Background (Melrose Productions, 1964). "He laughed a laugh as he looked at us. Did you think I'd gone to all this fuss, to hang one man? That's a thing I do, to stretch the rope when the rope is new..." The titular Hangman menaces a small town in this stunning hand-painted original production cel from the 1964 animated short film masterpiece The Hangman. Based on the Maurice Ogden poem "Hangman" and narrated by Herschel Bernardi, this short film tells the story of a town whose population is slowly whittled away by the appearance of a diligent executioner. It is a warning against passivity in the face of injustice, and in some interpretations, a critique of McCarthyism in the 1950s and 60s. The film was directed by Les Goldman and UPA veteran Paul Julian (1914 - 1995), and it consists almost entirely of still images with clever pans and dissolve cuts to suggest movement. Mr. Julian is credited with design and color for the film, with additional animation by Margaret Julian. Because the animation of the film was limited, original production artwork is exceedingly rare. This stellar cel can be seen at the 3:26 mark of the film, displayed on its original Key Master production background rendered in gouache on board. The setup measures and overall 19" x 10.5". Produced over 60 years ago, this rare gem shows minor handling and edge wear with some tape debris near edges. The condition is Very Good.
