Description
The End of Evangelion Asuka Langley Soryu and Shinji Ikari Production Cel (Gainax, 1997). The perplexing final moments of the intriguing anime film The End of Evangelion are represented in this lot, which features one of the most recognizable and haunting images from the movie (and even from the series!). The hand-painted production cel features a remarkable image of Asuka with bandages over her left eye, as Shinji's hands firmly close around her neck. Highly debated amongst fans of the series, this closing scene invites viewers to speculate about the motivation behind the characters' behavior, establishing this as one of the most discussed scenes in anime history. Moments after waking up, Shinji finds himself laying next to Asuka, who displays signs of her previous fight against the Mass Production Evas, showing us a scene shattered by the world-ending Third Impact. In a turn of events that surprised many fans, Shinji starts strangling Asuka, leaving us with this poignant picture. The striking scene between Asuka and Shinji measures a spectacular image size of 13.5" x 7.75" on the 13.75" x 9.25" production cel, numbered A14 in the top right corner, seen at the 1:25:28 mark of The End of Evangelion.
