Star Trek: The Animated Series USS Enterprise Cel with Key Master Production Background (Filmation, 1973). The original live-action Star Trek series was cancelled after only three seasons, falling short on completing the Enterprise's "5-Year Mission." In syndicated reruns, the show became so popular that creator Gene Roddenberry traveled the country, speaking at colleges about his plans for a revival. This all resulted in Star Trek's rebirth as an animated series, with most of the original cast providing voices. It premiered on 9/8/73 on NBC, and ran for two seasons with 22 episodes, winning an Emmy as Best Animated Series. It was known for its amazing hand-painted production backgrounds. They were of the highest quality seen on animated television shows. Here is the hand-painted production cel of the USS Enterprise on its pan hand-painted Key Master production background and production overlay from "The Lorelei Signal" episode. It ran on 9/29/73 and was episode #4. This is one of the single most detailed setups for this show we have seen. The background is 20" x 10.5", with a cel overlay of the large rock formation in front. The original layout is on back of the setup. Notes read "Enterprise glows brightly with alien green lite, and then lite absorbs into hull. Enterprise and Alien ship UL are seen against moving star BG." Tape on borders, with minor handling wear.
