Description

SpongeBob SquarePants "Scaredy Pants" SpongeBob Production Cel Master Setup (Nickelodeon, 1999). "Who should we scare next?" "There's a whole party just full of people down at the Krusty Krab!" Believing his costume truly inspires terror equal to that of the Flying Dutchman, a ghostly SpongeBob SquarePants is presented in this original production cel and Master background from the "Scaredy Pants" segment of Season 1 episode 13 of his eponymous Nickelodeon series. SpongeBob SquarePants was one of the last Nicktoons to premiere in the 1990s, and the only one of the decade still airing with a total of 14 seasons and counting. Of those 14 seasons, however, only Season 1 was traditionally cel animated. In this outstanding Halloween-themed episode, SpongeBob decides that to be scary he needs to look like a "real" ghost without any pointy corners. Patrick lends his best friend a helping hand with a little trim off the top and sides before SpongeBob redresses in his costume. The spooky sponge can be spotted near the 5:53 mark of the segment as he and Patrick dart off screen after attempting to frighten a homeowner who assumes they are just normal trick or treaters. With his uncharacteristically round head, SpongeBob has been hand-painted to a full-figured character size of 3.75" x 6.25" on the trimmed 12 field cel. The detailed Master background accompanying the setup can be spotted at the very end of the segment near the 10:53 mark as Patrick finally realizes the horror he has wrought in giving his friend a "slight" snip. It has been hand-painted in gouache on 12 field background board with an image area of approximately 11" x 8" and production codes present along the lower edge. Backgrounds for episode 13 were created by Richard Ziehler-Martin, Calvin G. Liang, Andy Clark, Peter Bennett, and Michael Chen. With typical studio handling and wear including the noted trimming of the cel found along the right edge, minor linework wear with areas of restoration, minor surface wear/debris, remaining tape, and light edge wear to the background, overall this setup is in Very Good condition.
