Description

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Snow White UNTRIMMED Production Cel with Studio-Printed Model Sheet and An Art in Its Making Book (Walt Disney/Hyperion, 1937/1994). "Why, why, you're all little men! Now, don't tell me who you are. Let me guess." Looking bright-eyed after a lengthy nap, Snow White makes a charmed appearance in this superb and rare UNTRIMMED original nitrate production cel from Disney's first feature-length animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs paired with a studio-printed model sheet from the film's production and the Hyperion Press book An Art in Its Making about the feature. Finally feeling rested after her harrowing ordeal, Snow awakens to find all seven Dwarfs peeking over the footboards of their beds and can be seen attempting to guess their names near the 36:19 timestamp while still wrapped in one of their quilts. Immensely rare, this full untrimmed 12 field nitrate cel features a delightfully centered half-figured image of Disney's first Princess hand-inked and hand-painted to an image area of 8.5" x 6.25" which is presented over a studio-printed model sheet for the quilt she's wrapped. Dated a year prior to the founding of Joe Grant's illustrious model department, model sheets like this were printed on photographic paper to be distributed in small quantities throughout the studio to be used as reference by the animators in keeping the characters and props consistent thought various scenes; this sheet and others pre-dating the department would help to lay the groundwork for what would become a standardized Disney practice. This outstanding setup was displayed at the Indianapolis Museum of Art's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs An Art in Its Making exhibit from December 4, 1994 to February 5, 1995 (as noted by a sticker on the frame's back) which showcased the personal archive of Stephen Ison, known at the time for owning the largest collection of original animation art from Disney's 1937 feature in the world. The unique setup is presented in a special carved frame created exclusively for the exhibit. The piece is under Plexiglas to an overall size of 20.5" x 18.5" with a mat aperture of 10.5" x 8.25". The cel is featured on page 99 of the included book which was published by Hyperion Press (1994) in collaboration with the Indianapolis Museum of Art and Stephen Ison as a critically incisive account of the film's production which showcased Ison's incredible collection; the 192-page hardcover book measures approximately 11" x 9.75" x 0.75". Ison would go on sell the majority of his impressive collection back to the Walt Disney Company around 2010, a few years shy of the legendary film's 75th anniversary. With typical handling and edge wear including faint age-related toning, slight rippling of the nitrate, and minor surface wear with a missing dust jacket for the book, overall this phenomenal tribute to Snow White is in Very Good condition. All frames are sold as-is. Photos are not representative of actual frame condition.
