Description
Sleeping Beauty RARE Special Effects Production Cels Group of 3 (Walt Disney, 1959). "In a faraway land, long ago, there lived a King and his fair Queen. Many years they had longed for a child, and finally their wish was granted. A daughter was born, and they called her Aurora." This lot features a few incredibly rare special effects cels that are shown throughout the Disney classic animated feature film Sleeping Beauty (1959) in relation to the good fairies Merryweather, Flora, and Fauna and other tense magical sequences. The 16th animated Walt Disney film was released theatrically on 1/2/1959. This fairy tale sees a wicked fairy who feels immense malevolence towards the royal family, so she places a curse upon their daughter the day she was born. The only person that can break this curse is a prince who is good and true, with of course a little help from the three good fairies. This movie was truly pushing the boundaries of animation of the time as it was in production for nearly a decade, but it shows in the final product. The SFX cel that instantly garners attention is the fairy wings cel that may have been used to test the visual aesthetics for each fairy; Merryweather, Flora, and Fauna. The SFX cel marked with "Seq. 19" comes from the climatic action sequence where Maleficent and her goblin goons are attacking Prince Philip by hurling boulders at him. Luckily, Flora is quick on her feet and turns them into bubbles which this SFX cel is one of the sparkles that's shining on the bubbles, which can be seen at the 1:06:29 timestamp. The last SFX cel was possibly used when Maleficent decided to take matters into her own hands as she teleports in front of Prince Phillip in one of the most magnificent shots in the film, as she surrounds herself by millions of sparkles and wild green flames swirling around her feet which is seen at the 1:09:10 timestamp. The special effects image measurements range from 1.75" x 1.75" to 12.5" x 7.25" and hand-painted at the Disney Ink and Paint Department in Burbank. The overall condition is Good to Very Good with a small crease in one corner, some residue, and minor handling wear and edge wear.Auction Info
