    Description

Sleeping Beauty Production Cel on Master Production Background (Walt Disney, 1959). Presented is the original Master background of King Stephan's castle under stormy skies which appears just after Prince Phillip's final battle with Maleficent. It can be seen at 1:10:44 in this epic Disney feature film. The magnificent pan production background is painted in gouache and measures 11.5" x 29". Over the background is an original hand-inked hand-painted production cel of Prince Phillip riding Sampson as he charges the dragon from around the 1:09:21 mark. The 5" x 5" cel has been meticulously trimmed to the image and paired with the background making it a true Master setup. The magnificent backgrounds for this film were painted by a stellar line-up of talent including Eyvind Earl, Frank Hermitage, Al Dempster, Bill Layne, Dick Anthony, Richard Thomas, Thelma Witmer, Walt Peregoy, Ralph Hulett, Fil Mottola, and Anthony Rizzo. This film took nearly ten years to complete and was the most expensive Disney studios produced up to that time. Artwork from it is arguably some of the most beautiful ever to come out of a Disney animated feature. The piece is in a mat measuring 36" x 18" with an opening of 28.5" x 11". The background has three very light vertical creases, small 1" tears in the upper right corner and in sky at left. The cel has separated from the paint on Sampson's front foot; otherwise condition is Very Good.
