Description

Robot Carnival "Chicken Man and Red Neck" Production Cel Setup with Key Master Background (A.P.P.P., 1987). The titular robot magician Chicken Man is featured here in this spectacular hand-painted original production cel setup from the short segment "Chicken Man and Red Neck", retitled in the American release as "Nightmare". Directed by Takashi Nakamura for the acclaimed sci fi anime anthology film Robot Carnival, this short shares some similarities with Fantasia's "Night on Bald Mountain", telling the tale of nightmarish and revelrous robots one night in Tokyo. It differs, however, with the inclusion of a humorous chase with Chicken Man, a drunk witness to the chaos. This image from the sequence can be seen at the 1:21:45 mark of the reordered American release of the anthology, as seen on YouTube. The cels are presented with their Key Master background, rendered masterfully in gouache by Hiroshige Sawai. An elaborate setup, part of the background is a cut-out element, uses as part of the foreground. This impressive piece measures an overall 15" x 10.5", and the background bears the number 146 in the upper right corner. The background shows a small tear in the lower left corner and a small pinhole in the lower right. The cels show taping near the top edge, and the condition overall is Very Good.
