Puppy Love Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse Black-and-White Nitrate Production Cel Setup with The Picnic Master Background (Walt Disney, 1930/33). "When your appetite, Ain't workin' right... That's called puppy love. Pup-pup-pup-puppy puppy love!" Nothing is quite so iconic as the enduring love between Mickey and Minnie, and that time-tested affection is on full display in this incredible and rare early 1930s Master setup featuring an original untrimmed nitrate cel of the paramours from Puppy Love over a fantastic Master production background from The Picnic. A holy grail setup sure to be the crowning jewel of any animation art collection! The Picnic debuted first of these two shorts on October 9, 1930, under the direction of Burt Gillett, and saw Mickey take Minnie out for a charming picnic as long as "little Rover" can come along too; this short was a critical step in the development of Pluto as a character who would receive his lasting name and design about six months later. The background featured in this lot appears as the opening scene of The Picnic beginning near the 0:15 timestamp, fading in just after the title card. It has been trimmed from a pan background which loops an incredible eight times before Mickey arrives at the home of his beloved. Puppy Love would make its debut on September 2, 1933, coincidentally also featuring Pluto in an important role. This short was directed by Wilfred Jackson, and saw Mickey, Minnie, and the respective pet pooches on a double date that almost ends up disastrous when Pluto steals Minnie's gift. The single-level cel featuring both Mickey and Minnie can be seen early on near the 1:30 timestamp just after Minnie enjoys the indulgent fragrance of the bouquet brought by her beau. Mickey and Minnie have similar character heights and share a combined image area of 6.25" x 3.5" on the untrimmed 12 field 2-peghole nitrate cel which is hand-inked with black on the topside and hand-painted with white on the underside. The hand-painted background has been masterfully rendered in monochrome gouache and trimmed to an overall size of 10" x 8.75". The setup has been matted to an overall size of 16" x 14.75" with an aperture of 9.75" x 7.75"; obscured by the mat, the cel is numbered 323 in the lower right and the lower edge of the background bears timing/frame markers for the looping sequence. This marks the first time to-date that Heritage has seen a surviving production cel OR original background from either of these historic productions (though we have previously offered animation drawings from both). With typical handling and edge wear including minor age-related toning, the noted trimming of the background, minor warping of the nitrate, and faint paint wear in the form of slight discoloration, overall this remarkably well preserved, astonishing over-90-year-old Master setup is in Good condition.
