Description

Pinocchio Honest John, Gideon, and Coachman Production Cel with Master/Key Master Background (Walt Disney, 1940). "Hi-diddle-dee-dee. An actor's life for me. A high silk hat and a silver cane, a watch of gold with a diamond chain." Honest John and Gideon sit with the nefarious Coachman at the Red Lobster Inn, discussing future business in this lot with a marvelous hand-painted and hand-inked production cel and a wonderful Master/Key Master background from Pinocchio, offered originally through the Courvoisier Art Program. The cel displays the villainous trio sitting together with the frightening Coachman measuring a figure size of 3" x 3.75", seen at the 50:48 timestamp, while Honest John occupies an image area of 1.5" x 2.5", and Giddeon measures 2.5" x 2.75", both seen at approximately the 53:01 mark of the film. The extraordinary Key Master/Master background shows up at the 50:44 timestamp and offers a clear image of the inn, partially clouded by cigar smoke in the film, and displaying stunning details such as the crab and fish carvings, the cigar stubs near the table, the texture on wood, and the uneven planks on the floor, all created in gouache on 12.75" x 10.75" background board. The skilled artists who created backgrounds in this classic Disney film include Art Riley, Claude Coats, Merle Cox, Ed Starr, Ray Huffine, Dick Anthony, Al Dempster, Eric Hansen, Mique Nelson, Maurice Noble, and Ralph Hulett. The background shows a Courvoisier certificate on its back. The cels have been professionally trimmed to image size and mounted on the background. Presenting light handling and edge wear from production, the lot is in Very Good condition.
