Neon Genesis Evangelion "Unfamiliar Ceilings" Eva Unit 01 Production Cel and Animation Drawing (Gainax, 1996). The intriguing first episode of the revolutionary anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion had viewers thrilled to watch the conclusion of the fight between the Eva Unit 01 and the third Angel, Sachiel. Subverting expectations, the second episode jumps back into the action but stops showing us the battle and continues with the aftermath of the fight, exploring how the world handles the destruction caused by two giant forces and how Shinji, the pilot, deals with his new life. It is at the end of the episode, while Shinji reminisces through the events, that we are treated with the extraordinary animation of the fight between the Evangelion and the Angel. At about the 19:31 mark of the episode, this incredible image of a battle-worn Eva Unit 01 shows up and displays the fierce capabilities of Shinji as a pilot in the most challenging circumstances. The hand-painted production cel features the iconic design of the Eva Unit 01 armor damaged by Sachiel while still showing the ferocious nature of the mech, measuring an impressive image size of 10.25" x 8" on the 12 field sized production cel, numbered A17 in the top right corner. The matching animation drawing also featured in this lot has the mech rendered in astonishing detail in graphite with intricate colored pencil shadings and details on 12 field sized animation paper. The production cel has a small section of the cel painted over; it displays minor fading on the linework and light surface scratches that don't affect the art. The animation drawing shows some light foxing, traces of paint from the production cel, and an animator's note in red ink. The lot shows, overall, light handling wear from production.
