Description
Neon Genesis Evangelion Rei Ayanami Production Cel and Animation Drawing (Gainax, 1995-96). "Shinji, do you want to become one with me? Do you want to become one, body and soul? It's something that feels really, really good, Shinji." When Shinji merges with Eva Unit 01, he exists in a dreamlike limbo state in which his inner conflicts manifest before him in various surreal visions. From one of several overtly philosophical sequences of Neon Genesis Evangelion, presented is an image that carries significant Oedipal overtones for fans in the know of Rei's shady past. Neon Genesis Evangelion is well known for its heady themes of individuality, consciousness, freedom, and responsibility, often through the lens of Freudian psychology. This original production cel is exemplary of the series at its most thought-provoking, a quality for which it is widely acclaimed. The piece can be seen at the 14:19 mark of the episode "Of the Shapes of Hearts and Humans." This hand-painted image of Rei Ayanami nearly fills the 12 field cel, and the piece is accompanied by its matching original animation drawing rendered in graphite and color pencil. Both the cel and drawing are numbered A19 in the upper right corners, and the cel is displayed on a printed background for presentation purposes.
