    Description

My Neighbor Totoro Mei and Satsuki Production Cel Setup with Key Master Background (Studio Ghibli, 1988). "Satsuki, Dad wasn't on the bus." "He'll be on the next one for sure." Big sister Satsuki remains optimistic after she and her sister Mei watch a bus come and go as they stand in the rain. From the unforgettable and iconic bus stop scene, this hand-painted original production cel setup can be seen at the 48:13 mark of the beloved Studio Ghibli classic My Neighbor Totoro. This stunning piece is presented on its original Key Master background, rendered masterfully in gouache and attributed to the great Studio Ghibli art director Kazuo Oga, who was challenged by director Hayao Miyazaki to raise his standards for the film. A newspaper article in the International Herald Tribune describes Oga's work on My Neighbor Totoro: "Set in a period that is both modern and nostalgic, the film creates a fantastic, yet strangely believable universe of supernatural creatures coexisting with modernity. A great part of this sense comes from Oga's evocative backgrounds, which give each tree, hedge and twist in the road an indefinable feeling of warmth that seems ready to spring into sentient life." Oga's contributions to Studio Ghibli would become a trademark style of the celebrated studio. In several of Miyazaki's initial concept paintings and even the theatrical poster, only one young girl character was planned for the film. According to Miyazaki, "If she was a little girl who plays around in the yard, she wouldn't be meeting her father at a bus stop, so we had to come up with two girls instead. And that was difficult." From one of the most recognizable scenes in Studio Ghibli history, this must-have Key Master setup measures 14.5" x 9.5", and it shows minor handling and edge wear from normal studio use. This piece can be seen on page 100 of the German Film Institute's gallery exhibition book Ga-Netchū! The Manga Anime Syndrome. Some faded linework on the cels, and the condition of this wonderful and elaborate Key Master setup is Very Good.
