Description
Mr. Bug Goes to Town Swat and Smack Production Cel Setup with Key Master Background (Fleischer Studios, 1941). Swat the Fly unabashedly enjoys the dulcet tones of Hoppity and Honey Bee crooning "Be My Little Baby Bumblebee" as Smack the Mosquito watches the couple with a scheming glare in this stunning and rare Key Master setup from Fleischer Studios' Mr. Bug Goes to Town (also known as Hoppity Goes to Town and Bugville). The second and final Fleischer Studios feature-length animated film, Mr. Bug released amidst America's entry into WWII which likely contributed to its poor box office performance. On the orders of their conniving boss C. Bagley Beetle, henchmen Swat and Smack follow the lovestruck couple and can be spotted spying on them from across the garden near the 25:27 mark. The hand-inked, hand-painted character cels have been meticulously trimmed to image in a combined size of 6" x 2.5" and affixed to the Key Master background which has been hand-painted in gouache to an image area of 10.5" x 8.5" on 12 field background board. The piece bears several hand-written production notes in the margins including the scene number 2-68 and a studio approval stamp signed by Fleischer Studio scenic artist Robert Little (1902 - 1994). The setup has been loosely mounted to an additional backing board, and the cels exhibit professional restoration. With typical handling and edge wear including the noted trimming and restoration of the cels, light age-related toning, faint surface wear, and minor corner creasing with a tear to the center peghole, overall this phenomenal and rare Key Master setup is in Very Good condition.More information about Fleischer Studios.
