Mother Pluto Production Cel Setup with Key Master Production Background (Walt Disney, 1936). This Silly Symphony short starred -- you guessed it -- Pluto! The cartoon was directed by future Snow White and Bambi director, Mr. David Hand, and released on 11/14/36. A mother hen lays her eggs in Pluto's dog house. As she is distracted into chasing a butterfly, Pluto comes back, and to his surprise, hatches all the hidden eggs. He takes care of the newborn chicks, even teaches them to drink water. When the mother hen returns and sees a dog is mothering her chicks, she brings the rooster to chase Pluto away and send him back to his dog house alone. This is an outstanding hand-inked, hand-painted FULL NITRATE (not trimmed) production cel of Pluto thinking about those chicks. It can be seen near the end of the short, at the 7:38 mark. Pluto's sadness is short-lived, as the chicks pop up from the hay in his dog house, to be reunited with "Mother" Pluto. This adorable cel is on its 12 field Key Master hand-painted production background. This may be the earliest Pluto Key Master setup known to exist! The bottom border of the background has the word "Fergy." This references Pluto's favorite animator, Disney Legend Norm Ferguson. This is a rare full nitrate 3-cel setup with TWO images of Pluto, with figure sizes of 4" and 7". The setup is matted with an opening of 10" x 8" and an overall mat size of 18.5" x 16.5".
