Description

Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol Mrs. Cratchit and Cratchit Children Production Cel Setup with Pan Key Master Background and Group of 4 Animation Drawings (UPA, 1962). "Their happiness lies in something apparently quite foreign to you...Love." Three members of the Cratchit family set the table for dinner while waiting for Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim to arrive home in this scene from the 1962 animated Christmas special Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol. This is a rare and beautiful original production cel setup with its matching pan Key Master background from the scene in which the Ghost of Christmas Present brings Scrooge (played by Mr. Magoo) to the Cratchit family's home, seen at about the 16:06 mark. This sequence is very important to Scrooge's character development throughout the special, as it allows the old miser to see how the Cratchit family is happy and full of love even though they are poor. The image is composed of five original, hand-painted, hand-inked 12 field production cels depicting Mrs. Cratchit and two of the Cratchit children. Although their names are not revealed in the special itself, production material and scripts noted these two children as being Belinda and Peter Cratchit. The combined image of the three characters measures about 6.75" x 5.5". The cels are displayed atop their beautifully-rendered matching Key Master pan background, which was painted by Jack Weiter from a layout by Sam Weiss. The background was painted in acrylic on 25" x 10.5" background board. This great Key Master setup can be seen in the book Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol: The Making of the First Animated Christmas Special on Page 170. The group also comes with matching original animation drawings for four of the cels. The cel setup is in Very Good condition, with some handling and edge wear. There are some cuts and tears on the edges of the cels, far away from the images. The background has a slightly uneven left edge, with some scuffing on the edges. The drawings are in Fair to Good condition, with some toning, creasing, staining, and adhered paint.
