Description

Little Hiawatha Grasshopper and Little Hiawatha Production Cel Setup with Master Background by Gustaf Tenggren (Walt Disney, 1937). The titular little Hiawatha is on the hunt in this detailed 12 field Master setup, but can he really shoot to kill? The David Hand-directed Silly Symphony, originally released on 5/15/1937, was inspired by the epic poem The Song of Hiawatha by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and told the story of a young Native American boy who tried to hunt in the forest but didn't have the heart to kill any of the animals he came across. The setup in this lot features the grasshopper Hiawatha tried to hunt at about 2:34, while the boy himself appears at roughly 4:03 when he tries to face off against a trembling baby rabbit. Both characters, 1.25'' x .75'' and 2.75'' x 5'' respectively, are displayed on a mixed media Master background found at around 5:23 that was created by legendary Swedish illustrator Gustaf Tenggren (1896 - 1970). Tenggren used his fairy tale illustration background, particularly illustrating for the popular Swedish folklore magazine Bland Tomtar och Troll / Among Gnomes and Trolls, to create work for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Bambi, Pinocchio, and even notable shorts like The Old Mill and The Ugly Duckling. The lot is displayed in a 16'' x 12.5'' mat and the cel has been professionally restored with the grasshopper trimmed to figure and attached to Hiawatha's cel. Good condition with faint rippling to the cel, and light handling.
From the Disney Legend Inductee Andreas Deja Collection.
