Kiki's Delivery Service Kiki Production Cel with Production Background (Studio Ghibli, 1989). "But, first, here's the weather forecast. Skies are clearing up thanks to a high-pressure front moving in from the mountains. Mild wind will blow in from the west, pushing the clouds out by this evening. There'll be a beautiful full moon lighting up the sky, so, if you've been planning something special, tonight might be the night." Serenely lying on the grass, Kiki is about to get the sign she needed to start her journey in this exceptionally gorgeous hand-painted production cel from Hayao Miyazaki's wondrous coming-of-age animated film Kiki's Delivery Service. As beautiful as it is rare, this cel took part in animating the idyllic opening scene in the movie, appearing at about the 00:38 timestamp, just as she hears that this midnight there will be a clear sky and a full moon, perfect conditions for her to take off on her own and start her witch training. This marvelous 13.75" x 9" cel three-layer production cel features a contemplative Kiki in her rare first outfit, a green dress and pink apron, measuring 10.25" x 7.75", accompanied by the flowers and grass around her, all featuring an overall image size of 13.25" x 7.75", a prime example of the serene atmosphere of this famous first scene. The lot is offered on a production background from a different anime production, rendered in gouache on a 14.25" x 10" background board. The cel has its layers adhered together with the peghole area taped to their top edge, taped to the background with archival artist tape. Some toning is present on the tape. The cel and background present staple holes on the top edge. Faint surface scuffing and minor toning are present on the cel. Overall, this lot shows very light handling and edge wear from production.
