Description

Jiminy Cricket Original Production Cel Signed by Preston Blair and Matching Animation Drawing (Walt Disney Studios, c. 1970s) "Now you're talkin'! Come on slowpoke, I'll race ya home!" The happy-go-lucky Jiminy Cricket is trying to remain suave as he floats his way down in this original hand-painted cel. The designer behind the memorable anthropomorphic cricket is one of Disney's revered "Nine Old Men" Ward Kimball (1914-2002). His approach was to humanize the charming cricket by making him more bipedal rather than laying on his belly thus making him more relatable to children. Ward took inspiration from Disney's The Grasshopper and the Ant (1934) in both design and character model because the grasshopper and the cricket share a tailcoat and a top hat making them almost twins. The original production cel is signed by famous American animator Preston Blair (1908-1995) in the lower left corner of the production cel. Preston Blair also contributed to a few but quite notable key pieces of the Walt Disney filmography such as "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" segment from Fantasia (1940), Pinocchio, and Bambi before departing for MGM (Metro Goldwyn Mayer) animation department. The character size for Jiminy Cricket measures 4.75" x 7" and is displayed over scene matching print background for presentation purposes. The 3-peg hole drawing measures 14" x 10.5" and is rendered in graphite with 530 marked in the lower right corner. COA is included with the lot. The overall condition is Good to Very Good with some handling wear and edge wear and light corner folds,
