Hoppity Goes to Town Hoppity, Mr. Bumble and Dog Production Cel Setup with Master Production Background (Max Fleischer, 1940). This animated feature was the last one for Fleischer Studios which became Famous Studios shortly after its release. Hoppity Goes to Town, also known as Mr. Bug Goes to Town, is a richly animated film that was ordered after the studio's success with Gulliver's Travels. The story is a fun twist on Maurice Maeterlinck's book The Life of the Bee, but the background art steals the show. This is an original hand-painted production background from this film. It is actually in two pieces as the fire hydrant and section of sidewalk are on an overlay. The entire background measures 13" x 26" and includes dates, notes and OK's along the left border. Hoppity and Mr. Bumble are hand-inked and hand-painted on a 12 field nitrate cel and it can be seen at the 35:22 mark. Over it is a 13" x 26" sheet of clear acetate with a trimmed cel of a dog from an unknown production applied to the upper right corner, presumably to balance out the composition. This is a fascinating setup from the one studio that truly competed with Disney in early feature animation. The background and overlay artwork show wear, handling and pinholes. The artwork is lightly mounted to a sheet of foam-core measuring 18" x 30". The cels appear to have had minor restoration and condition for the lot is Very Good.
