Description

Heavy Metal "Soft Landing" Opening Title Sequence Production Cel with Preliminary Production Background (Columbia, 1981). "Radar, Radar, Rader, Rider!" Piloting a 1960 Corvette, Grimaldi descends into Earth's atmosphere in this excellent original production cel from the opening titles sequence of the cult classic Heavy Metal. The sequence, title "Soft Landing," used a photographic technique in which live-action photos were airbrushed, trimmed, and mounted to an animation cel, and subsequently displayed on hand-painted backgrounds. Seen at the 2:04 mark of the film, this cel bears the hand-cut car photo element, displayed over a preliminary production background rendered in gouache on board. The setup includes a cel layer featuring air-brushed cloud effects. The piece is displayed in a 18" x 15" mat with a window size of 12.25" x 9.5". Overall minor handling and edge wear with some trimming, and the condition is Very Good.
