Description
Heavy Metal "So Beautiful & So Dangerous" Edsel and Zeke Production Cel Setup with Key Master Background Attributed to Angus McKie (Columbia, 1981). "Uh... too late. Molecular, uh, molecular instability zone around the spacecraft. You cannot leave." "What? Is he kidding?" "Uh... oh yeah, 'instability zone...' You're stuck here." Zeke lies to the buxom stenographer Gloria so that the Robot can make a pass at her in the comedic animated segment "So Beautiful & So Dangerous." Seen at the 51:19 mark of the animated anthology film Heavy Metal, This is a fantastic hand-painted original production cel setup featuring the stoner aliens Zeke and Edsel (voiced by Harold Ramis and Eugene Levy, respectively). This setup is displayed on its original Key Master production background, hand-painted in gouache on board. The impressive backgrounds of "So Beautiful & So Dangerous" segment are credited to Janos Kass, Denis Ryan, and the original comic creator Angus McKie! In the book The Art of Heavy Metal: Animation for the Eighties, Carl Macek writes on McKie's involvement with the project: "along with preparing model sheets and layout designs, Angus painted over seventy backgrounds (the interiors of the alien spacecraft) for 'So Beautiful & So Dangerous.'" This rare background is rendered beautifully in gouache on board, attributed to Angus McKie! The setup bears an official Heavy Metal seal, indicating it was originally sold as part of a Heavy Metal Art Portfolio, which featured original works from each segment of the film. The 12 field setup shows minor handling and edge wear from normal studio use, and the background is trimmed to fit the size of the cels. The condition of this excellent find is Very Good.Auction Info
