Description
Hare-Um Scare-Um Happy Rabbit (Bugs Bunny Prototype) Production Cel (Warner Brothers, 1939). "Please pass the ketchup, I think it's going to rain!" Here is a rare hand-inked, hand-painted laminated production cel of Happy Rabbit -- the early prototype of Bugs Bunny. Hare-Um Scare-Um featured the third appearance of Happy Rabbit and the first one to be colored grey; in his first two appearances, he was colored white. The model sheet for this short was done by Charles Thorson, and the short was directed by Ben "Bugs" Hardaway and Cal Dalton, with some animation by Gil Turner. Legend has it that Thornton's model sheet came back marked "Bugs' Bunny" and some animation historians credit this model sheet and this cartoon as the birth of Bugs Bunny. This is a rare production cel where he is singing Daffy Duck's theme song line "Please pass the ketchup." You can see this at the 6:11 mark into the short. Amazing full-figure image of Happy Rabbit with his ketchup bottle, measuring 5". The cel is laminated to a two-color board measuring 12" x 9", and has the silkscreened motto "This is an original painting I used in Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies, © Leon Schlesinger." This was the normal silkscreened motto used in many of the 1939-40 pieces released as part of the short-lived Warner Brothers Studios Animation Art Program. Minor handling and tape on border, otherwise Very Good condition.Auction Info
