Description

Future Boy Conan Lana Production Cel with Production Background (Nippon Animation, 1978). From the directorial debut of legendary anime filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, this is a wonderful hand-painted original production cel featuring Lana from the classic 1978 anime series Future Boy Conan. Based on novel The Incredible Tide, Future Boy Conan tells the story of two young adventurers in a post-apocalyptic version of Earth brought on by the Cold War. Miyazaki's approach to the story had a much more optimistic view in comparison to the source material. Gearing the series toward a younger audience, Miyazaki stated, "even if someone's lost all hope for the future, I think it is incredibly stupid to go around stressing this to children. Emphasize it to adults if you have to, but there's no need to do so to children. It would be better to simply not say anything at all." This wonderful piece from the historical anime series is presented on a production background, possibly from the series, hand-painted beautifully in gouache on background board. The piece measures an overall 10.5" x 9.5", and the cel is numbered A15 in the upper right corner. Showing minor handling and edge wear with some tape in the upper right and lower left corners, the piece shows some light fading in the linework. This image can be seen on page 110 of the German Film Institute's gallery exhibition book Ga-Netchu! The Manga Anime Syndrome. The background shows trimming, and the condition overall is Very Good.
