Description

Football Fever Oswald the Rabbit and Devil Animation Cels Group of 2 (Walter Lantz, 1937/c. 1930s). Oswald, the "Lucky Rabbit," is a vintage cartoon character that bounced around from studio to studio. He was Walt Disney's first animated star, but Disney lost the rights to the character (and much of his animating staff) in 1928. Oswald shorts were then made by Charles Mintz for Universal Studios, with animation by Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising. When Universal terminated Mintz's contract, the character then went to Walter Lantz. Here's a very rare original hand-inked, hand-painted 12 field production cel of Lantz's version, known by fans as the "white" Oswald. The cel is from the 1937 black and white short Football Fever, and this is a great full-figure image of the spunky rabbit; you can see this image at the 3:17 mark, as Oswald does a little dance to perk up his football team (being badly beaten by the opposing Ruffians team). Oswald's overall image size is approximately 4" x 3.5", and the cel is noted as O14 in the upper right. Accompanying Oswald is a very cool hand-inked, hand-painted 12 field cel of a devil or demon from a different Lantz B&W short (we couldn't find it in Football Fever, but it's from the same time period). The pitchfork-wielding demon has an image size of 5.5" x 4.75", and is noted as D78 in the upper right corner. There's a tiny tear along the bottom edge of the demon cel, well away from the image. Oswald's cel has a few spots of missing paint and cracks in his ear. Cels are in overall Very Good condition with minor handling and edge wear.
