Description
Eyvind Earle Sleeping Beauty Production Cel Setup with Master Background (Walt Disney, 1959). This extraordinary production cel setup features Briar Rose and Prince Phillip. The cels are paired with a hand-painted Master background from the hand of the master himself, Eyvind Earle (1916 - 2000). As the film's color stylist, Earle was responsible for styling the background and colors and giving the movie its magical, medieval look. The production cels are hand-inked, hand-painted on 16 field acetate. The production background was hand-painted by Eyvind Earle using gouache on 29" x 12" background board. You will see the image of Briar Rose/Princess Aurora at or around the 27:45 mark and the image of Prince Phillip around the 44:46 mark. This gorgeous Earle background is revealed around the 25:10 mark, sans an overlay cel. In 1998, at its Annie Awards show in Glendale, the International Animated Film Society gave Earle its Windsor McCay Award for lifetime achievement. In 2015 Eyvind Earle was posthumously inducted into Disney's hall of fame program as on official Disney Legend. The piece is framed to 39" x 22" with a matboard aperture of 27.25" x 11". Frame sold as-is. Included with the piece and affixed to the back is a copy of a letter to Earle asking him to indicate on the back of the enclosed color Xerox copy of the background whether or not he had indeed painted this piece. He indicates that he did in fact paint this. A great acquisition opportunity for some lucky collector! Small paint crack in Phillips's face and Briar Rose's dress. Very Good condition.Auction Info
