Description

Education for Death Rare Original Germania Character Study Drawing (Walt Disney, 1943). Disney's 1943 World War II propaganda film Education for Death was largely a more serious film about the indoctrination of a boy named Hans through Nazi education, but those grim, dark depictions were contrasted by a caricatured Hitler and the cheerful operatic singer representing Germania. We have rarely seen anything of this character but she appears in this original character study with four hilarious expressions. They were prepared to practice for the scene starting at roughly 2:38 when knight Hitler wakes princess Germania, who immediately checks her beer stein for more. It's noted on page 67 of John Baxter's Disney During World War II book that Disney Legend Ward Kimball was the one to animate these comical scenes and the one who ended up "having all of the fun", animating the singer as a caricature of the one of the most powerful figures in the Nazi party Hermann Göring while the other animators were assigned more realistic and gruesome depictions of Nazi Germany. Each drawing is rendered in graphite with color pencil and three of the expressions have been trimmed and attached to the 12 field page. They measure an impressive 12.25'' x 9.75'' combined and the lot is in Very Good condition with light age-related toning, pinholes, and faint handling wear.
From the Disney Legend Inductee Andreas Deja Collection.
