Description
Dragon's Lair Dirk the Daring and Dragon Production and Color Model Cel Setup with Key Master Background Video Game Art (Don Bluth, 1983). "Lead on, adventurer. Your quest awaits!" The narrator fails to mention how notoriously difficult that quest is. Presented is a remarkable hand-painted original production and color model cel setup from the 1983 traditionally animated video game Dragon's Lair. It is presented over its hand-painted original Key Master background of the titular dragon's lair in the final battle of the game, rendered stunningly in gouache on a large, 16 field background board. A history-making endeavor, Dragon's Lair used hand-drawn animation for its interface using laserdisc technology allowing for superior graphics compared to other games at the time. Animated by the legendary team of Don Bluth, John Pomeroy, Gary Goldman and Rick Dyer, the game's challenging gameplay functioned as a forerunner of the modern Quick Time Event mechanics seen in popular games like God of War, Resident Evil 4 and the Mass Effect franchise. The unique and revolutionary visual and mechanical design of Dragon's Lair has made it an enduring classic for decades, being ported to many platforms through video game history, and the game has seen a resurge in popularity due to a recent reference in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. This elaborate 4-cel setup shows minor handling wear, and is taped to the background which also shows minor handling and edge wear. Dirk the Daring's cel is a 12 field production cel as opposed to the other 16 field color model cels (his cel is seen in the shot right before this one). The pegholes are widened on his cel, with one reinforced. The overall condition of this rare and spectacular piece is Very Good.More Information: EDIT: Added Video Game Art reference.
