DescriptionDr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas The Grinch and Max Production Cel Setup and Key Master Background (MGM, 1966). "What a Grinchy trick... with this coat and this hat, I'll look just like St. Nick!" Arguably one of the most beloved holiday specials to grace the small screen, Dr Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas had been an enduring family favorite for over 50 years and going strong. It has aired every year since December 18, 1966 and has been made into two feature length films. The case could be easily made that this scene is one of the most memorable in the film. Artwork from this Chuck Jones (1912 - 2002) production is always in demand by collectors and this may be the most complete production setup ever offered for sale. It's an original hand-painted 12 field multi-cel setup of the Grinch and Max from around the 8:36 mark as the pair begin work on the Grinch's Santa costume. Each of the four cels in the setup bears the number 84, align perfectly and are over the hand-painted Key Master Production background which is marked #7755 BG84. A clear cel is over the setup to protect it. Originally a gift back in 1966 from a noted television director to a family member, this piece has never been seen or offered for sale to the public before. The art has always been kept out of direct sunlight and the cel and background colors appear as bright as the day they were filmed. This is a true piece of animation history and the Holy Grail for any Grinch, Jones or Seuss collector, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a truly complete and original Key Master Grinch setup of this quality from this timeless holiday classic. Minor handling with tape residue on cel edges and the top cel has a light scratch across it; otherwise condition is Very Good. Frame is sold as is.
