Donald's Penguin/Donald's Better Self Production Cel and Background Setup (Walt Disney, 1938-39). Donald Duck fans, check this lot out! Jack King (1895 - 1958) worked at the Disney studio from 1936 to 1948. He worked on over 40 Donald Duck cartoons. Three of them received Academy Award nominations. This is a superb original pre-production 12 field hand-painted background from Donald's Better Self, labeled on the bottom RM8. It was the interior of Donald's house, where the Angel Duck wakes him up to take him to school. This background did not go under camera. This short was directed by Jack King and released 3/11/28. Carl Barks did story work on this cartoon. The background is painted with gouache on 12 field 5-peghole animation board. Looks like a portrait of Donald's grandfather is hanging on the wall! Placed on this background is a rare color model cel of Donald Duck from Donald's Penguin. This short was also directed by Jack King and released on 8/11/39. In the cartoon, Donald receives a present from Admiral Bird from the North Pole: a small penguin named Tootsie, delivered boxed in ice. This image of Donald with the gun can be seen at 5:19. Cel and background work very well together. The cel is interesting as it has Donald Duck in a blue hat, where he wore a white hat in the short. This is either an Ink and Paint color model, or had restoration. He went from white hat to blue hat near this time period. The nitrate cel is trimmed to 11" x 9". The gun-toting Donald Duck is a great 4" image. Minor handling wear. In Very Good condition.
