Description

Astro Boy Production Cel with Production Background (Tezuka Productions, c. 1980-81). The titular robot hero Astro Boy (Atom) is featured here in this marvelous hand-painted original production cel from the 1980 color adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's groundbreaking classic Astro Boy. The series is most known for being the first work of fiction to embody the aesthetic known as anime, and Tezuka, often regarded as the "God of Manga", developed the designs of Astro Boy drawing inspiration from classic Walt Disney and Max Fleischer cartoons. This fantastic cel featuring the iconic hero is presented on an original production background hand-painted in gouache on background board, possibly from the series. The piece measures an overall 14.5" x 10", and the background is numbered 24-27 in the upper right corner. The cel is numbered A1, and the setup as a whole shows minor handling and edge wear. This piece is showcased on page 118 of the German Film Institute's gallery exhibition book Ga-Netchu! The Manga Anime Syndrome. The condition is Very Good.
From the Glad Museum Collection.
