Description

Astro Boy Production Cel Setup with Production Background (Tezuka Productions, c. 1980-81). Simply iconic, this terrific hand-painted original production cel setup from the 1980 color adaptation of Astro Boy features the eponymous robot hero flying at a low altitude over a beautiful tropical setting. The historical significance of Astro Boy can't be overstated. Created by Osamu Tezuka, regarded as the "God of Manga", and originally written for TV by Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino, Astro Boy is considered to be the very first animated series to embody the now popular aesthetic known as anime. This large, elaborate pan setup featuring the groundbreaking character measures approximately 18.75" x 11.25", and it can be seen on page 51 of the German Film Institute's gallery exhibition book Ga-Netchu! The Manga Anime Syndrome. The production background is hand-painted masterfully in gouache on two pieces of background board, possibly from the series. The cel is numbered A-13 in the upper right corner, and the setup as a whole shows minor handling and edge wear with generous use of tape near edges to accomadate pegholes. The cel shows some fading in the linework, and the condition of the piece is Very Good.
