Animal Farm Boxer Production Cel Setup with Custom Background (Halas and Batchelor, 1954). "And during the morning, what appeared to be an ambulance arrived. Only, Benjamin suspected it wasn't an ambulance. The other animals finally recognized the death wagon from Mr. Whymper's glue factory..." In one of Animal Farm's most tragic scenes, the beloved workhorse Boxer is hauled to the glue factory, due to the treachery of the dictatorial pig Napoleon. Based on George Orwell's allegorical novella of the same name, Animal Farm is an ambitious feature-length adaptation. Darker in tone than its Disney contemporaries, Animal Farm took fifteen years to generate a profit, but it became a staple in classrooms across the United Kingdom and the United States for decades. The story reflects the events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917, and then on into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union. The CIA's Office of Policy Coordination bought the rights to the film as a measure to combat communism, even making changes to the original script. Original production artwork from the film is highly sought-after by animation historians, rarely coming to market. This hand-inked and hand-painted cel is displayed on a custom painting background rendered in gouache on board. The cel can be seen at the 1:03:00 mark of the film. The setup is displayed in a 19" x 16.5" mat with a window size of 10.25" x 8". Overall minor handling and edge wear, and the Boxer cel is trimmed to image and mounted to the setup.
