Alice in Wonderland Alice and Bread-and-Butterflies Production Cel Setup with Master Background Signed by Walt Disney (Walt Disney, 1951). "Curious butterflies..." "Bread-and-butterflies." Alice meets another group of marvelously peculiar creatures in this vibrant original Master setup from the 1951 animated classic Alice in Wonderland elevated by a Walt Disney-signed matboard which also features one of the curious bread-and-butterflies. Disney's whimsical adaptation of Lewis Carroll's beloved tales of Alice's adventures premiered on July 26, 1951, with a famous re-release in 1974 that grossed significantly more than its debut. Having shrunk herself once again, Alice wonders into the nearby flower garden where she encounters the bread-and-butterflies. They are seen fluttering into frame beginning near the 26:24 timestamp of the film and are seen off and on throughout the next four minutes during the "Golden Afternoon" song sequence, while Alice is spotted in a similar pose near the 26:40 timestamp. The Master background appears to have been trimmed from a larger pan background with this setup's segment spotted near the 27:50 timestamp also during "Golden Afternoon". Each hand-inked and hand-painted, half-figured Alice stands neatly center frame measuring approximately 5" x 5.75" while the loaf-worth of bread-and-butterflies share a combined image area of 4.25" x 3.5" in the upper right, all meticulously trimmed to image and applied to the Master background or matboard. The background has been hand-painted in gouache on board featuring dappled sunlight filtering in between the flowers and leaves. Backgrounds of the film are credited to Ray Huffine, Ralph Hulett, Art Riley, Brice Mack, Dick Anthony, and Thelma Witmer, from the color and styling of Mary Blair, Claude Coats, John Hench, Ken Anderson, and Don Da Gradi. The piece has been framed under Plexiglas to an overall size of 16" x 15" with a mat aperture of 10" x 7.75". This setup was prepared by the Studio's Art Props Department as a VIP gift employing unique embellishments including hand-painted antennae for several bread-and-butterflies and highlights to Alice's hair, featuring a matboard dedication in Walt's hand reading "To Daisy with all my Best Wishes Walt Disney". The mat also bears an Original WDP stamp above the inscription and includes the original CoA, both reminiscent of Disney's first foray into animation as fine art with the Courvoisier Galleries approximately two decades earlier. With typical handling and edge wear including very minor edge curling/lifting of the trimmed cels, areas of paint separation/cracking primarily to the skirt of Alice's apron, and minor staining to the matboard, overall this wonderous Master setup with Walt Disney signed matboard is in Very Good condition.
