Description

Alex Toth - Space Angel Concept/Storyboard Drawing (Cambria Studios, c. 1962-63). By the hand of the great Alex Toth (1928 - 2006), presented is a gorgeous original concept/storyboard drawing created for one of the celebrated artist's earliest jobs in animation. Cambria Studios initially hired Alex Toth to create layout drawings near the end of their first televised release, Clutch Cargo. According to Dean Mullaney and Bruce Canwell's book Genius, Animated, "Alex so impressed his bosses[...] Cambria rehired the artist to design a new Synchro-Vox series, Space Angel, and to lead, and help staff, Angel's six-man art department." Space Angel was Toth's first significant foray into the world of animation, shortly before his impactful career with Hanna-Barbera Studios. This is an unbelievably rare drawing rendered in graphite on 10.5" x 6.75" vellum, masterfully crafted as only Alex Toth can. Drawings similar to this one can be seen on pages 10-15 of Genius, Animated. This incredible piece shows minor handling and edge wear with light smudging and a single pinhole near the left edge. As a bonus, the back side of this drawing also shows some ink work. The condition is Very Good.
