Description

Fantasia "Dance of the Hours" Studio-Used Choreography Reference and Storyboard Prints Group of 33 (Walt Disney, 1940). "In case the complex witchery of other Fantasia sequences may lead you to feel that "Dance of the Hours" has the subtlety of a barn door, let me assure you that this is the art that conceals art." Long-time Disney artist and director Ken O'Connor's (1908 - 1998) words underscore the unique artistry presented in this rare collection from his personal archive of over 30 reference prints for the "Dance of the Hours" segment on which he served as Layout Director in Disney's musical extravaganza Fantasia. The majority of this rare and unusual collection comes in the form of 25 reference photo prints depicting moments throughout Acts Three and Four of the segment created using a three-dimensional diagram of the dance's set and 3" tall miniature maquettes of Elephanchine, Hyacinth Hippo, and Ben Ali Gator; a similar set of these petite reference maquettes will also be available in Heritage's December 2025 Animation Art Signature Auction. These photos measure approximately 10" x 8" and the majority bear studio stamps with hand-written numbers on the reverse side; one in particular features the segment's director T. Hee (1911 - 1988) comically gazing out over the mockup set's Third Act with Elephanchine's ballet troupe. Also included are two 28.5" x 20" oversized prints featuring a choreography layout for Hyacinth Ben Ali's dance routine and layout sketches for the alligator acrobatics at the top of Act Four. Rounding out the lot are six 11.5" x 11" storyboard prints for sequences 10.1 (two pairs) and 10.2 (one pair). These prints stand as a testament to the incredible work that went into Fantasia's production. With typical handling and edge wear including age-related toning, fold creases, pinholes, surface wrinkles with minor edge tearing, and light surface wear/debris, overall this rare collection from the personal archive of a Disney Legend is in Good condition.
