Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas Publicity/Art Props Cel (MGM, 1966). "He brought everything back, all the food for the feast! And he, he himself, the Grinch carved the roast beast!" These are the final words in the narration of the original holiday television special Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas. This timeless classic cherished around the world was co-produced by Chuck Jones and Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) and features background design by the legendary Maurice Noble. It has aired every year since its 1966 release and has a fan base that spans generations. Presented in this lot is an original publicity/art props cel setup of the Grinch preparing to slice the roast beast for his faithful dog Max and little Cindy Lou Who. It's an ideal summation based on the final scene in the show. Created to be reproduced for publicity purposes, the composition is comprised of hand-painted cels of each of the three characters that have been trimmed to the images and applied to a full cel of the Christmas wreath. The assembled cels are over a solid blue background with a piece of white board cut in the shape of the tabletop glued to it. It's a fascinating example of old-school paste-up from the days before computers. Like most publicity pieces, the image was composed to convey an idyllic version with all three of the characters together. This one-of-a-kind art-props setup dates to the original release of the cartoon and continues to appear in promotional style guides to this day. It is a true piece of Grinch history. The setup is in a mat of 18" x 14" with a widow of 11" x 8". It shows handling and slight curling at the cel edges. Condition is Very Good.
