    Description

Disney Consumer Products Lion King Animation Cel (Walt Disney, c.1990s).
The idea for The Lion King was conceived in late 1988 during a conversation between Jeffrey Katzenberg, Roy E. Disney, and Peter Schneider on a plane to Europe to promote Oliver & Company. During the conversation, the topic of a story set in Africa came up, and Katzenberg immediately jumped at the idea. Fast-forward to 2016 when The Lion King was chosen for preservation by the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Based on this groundbreaking film we have a superb animation cel showing Timon & Pumbaa and the film's protagonist, Simba. Disney did not produce any hand-painted production cels for the film but rather chose to computer colorize the characters making this cel very rare. The cel measures a staggering 17" x 15" with the image area measuring 9" x 10.5". The cel was hand-inked and hand-painted at the world-famous Ink and Paint Department located on the studio lot in Burbank, California. The piece was created for use by Disney Consumer Products and comes to us from the personal collection of Paul Wenzel. Paul became Disney Consumer Products first Art Director for their creative publishing team, and in 1985, he was made Creative Director of Character Art supervising over 25 artists. The artwork is in Fine condition.
