Aladdin Jafar, Iago, Aladdin, and Jasmine Presentation Cel and Pan Background (Walt Disney, 1992). John Musker and Ron Clements, the directing team behind The Little Mermaid, directed this animated feature film that took in over $500 million worldwide. It spawned two direct to feature films, an animated TV series, and is rumored to be coming to Broadway in 2014. This film had no hand-painted production cels, only hand-painted production backgrounds. On October 9, 1993, Sotheby's held a sale of these hand-painted production backgrounds from Aladdin. The original production drawings for these backgrounds were prepared by the Walt Disney Ink and Paint Department as "one of one" cels, which were placed over the backgrounds. The cover lot, #112 had a special background of Acrabah painted by Dean Gordon, one of the original background painters for the film. He has signed this background on the margin "D. Gordon '93." The detailed background is approximately 20" x 14" and is striking on its own. A special cel of Aladdin, Jasmine, Jafar, and Iago is placed on the background. This is the exact set-up used for the Sotheby's catalog cover. It is in essence published or production artwork, as it was all used for the catalog. Images of the characters are Jafar who is 11", Iago - 4", and Jasmine and Aladdin who are 6". The background is a masterpiece! When this lot was originally sold the proceeds went to the Make a Wish Foundation. The original Sotheby's tag is included in the sale. Matted to an overall 30" x 25", ready to be framed and enjoyed.Auction Info
