Description

Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor Sinbad Color Model Nitrate Cel and Master Background (Max Fleischer, 1936). In the book The 50 Greatest Cartoons, by Jerry Beck, this cartoon ranks #17. It is the highest-ranking Fleischer cartoon on the list. This is a rare hand-inked and hand-painted color model nitrate cel of "The most remarkable fellow -- Sinbad the Sailor." The cel is on a hand-painted Master production background, which has Rokh, the Mighty Eagle appearing as dinner, after tangling with Popeye! The background measures approximately 12" x 9" and is marked "Sc 38B." The cel is marked "Sc 38B" to match the markings on the background. The cel is also marked "Sample cel 24" at the top. Sinbad is 4" tall. There is slight paint loss in his left foot, and there are several tiny spots of paint separation. The background is pure, classic Fleischer. Extremely rare and in Fine condition.

Needless to say I was overwhelmed by the results of the auction and I truly believe it was Jill’s efforts in promoting and displaying the piece that brought in the extra value.
