Description

Pocahontas Kocoum and John Smith Presentation Cel Setup and Production Background (Walt Disney, 1995). Kocoum and Captain John Smith battle it out in this pivotal scene at the 58:50 mark of Disney's 33rd animated feature and sixth of the what is considered the Disney Renaissance. On February 24, 1996 in New York City, The Art of Pocahontas auction was held, with only 289 lots. As no production cels were actually used on the film, one-of-a-kind presentation cels were created by the Walt Disney Ink and Paint Department using archived animation drawings. Each cel made was paired with the matching original hand-painted production background, making a one-of-a-kind Key Master setup. These setups were the only production artwork from this film released by Walt Disney Studios. This was lot #220 in the auction and it features an 11.5" x 6" character image on a 16 field 2-cel setup that bears a Disney seal in the lower right. The setup is presented over a hand-painted production background rendered in gouache on illustration board that features an array of sequence, scene and production numbers along the bottom border and a studio property stamp on back. It's a wonderfully dramatic scene from a Disney film that received two Academy Awards and spawned a direct to video sequel in 1998. Minor Handling and condition is Very Good.
