    Description

Pluto Studio Maquette (Walt Disney, c. 1940s). Pluto sniffs around with a smile in this absolutely wonderful original Disney Studio maquette. This is one of the largest Disney maquettes we've seen to date, and the first original maquette of a "Fab Five" character we've offered. Pluto received his own series of shorts in 1937 after co-starring with Mickey Mouse. This handsome piece, which includes a WDP stamp along the side of the base and all original paint, may have been created as a guide for one of his solo cartoons. The maquette is in painted plaster measuring 13" x 4.25" at the base; the figure measures approximately 10.25" x 3.75" x 3". The notation "In Care of Jack Iversen" is written in graphite on the underside; Mr. Iversen was a Disney animator in the early 1940s before joining the Marine Corps in 1943; he returned to his career in animation in 1946, working for Warner Brothers and Hanna-Barbera; he was also a print media cartoonist and toy designer. This maquette is truly spectacular, with very well preserved paint. Overall condition is Very Good.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
