    Description

Plane Crazy Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Airplane Production Drawing Group (Walt Disney, 1928-29). The Mickey Mouse short Plane Crazy was first shown as a silent film to a test audience on May 15, 1928, making it technically the first-ever Mickey cartoon. Co-directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks (who reportedly worked six straight weeks on the film, with help from Hugh Harmon and Rudolph Ising), sound was added, and the film was released to the general public on March 17, 1929 as the fourth Mickey cartoon, after Steamboat Willie, The Galopin' Gaucho, and The Barn Dance. This pair of Disney Studio 12-field, 2-peghole graphite drawings from that film are some of the earliest we've seen. Mickey and Minnie appear on one sheet of animation paper, with #371 in the bottom right corner, and #180 stamped in blue on the reverse. The second drawing features the airplane as it swoops up and down with a trail of exhaust smoke; it's marked #307 in the lower right corner, with #180 stamped in blue on the reverse. There's a tiny tear in the bottom right that slightly touches the penciled number, but is far away from the image; otherwise, both pieces are in Fine condition. These are two Ub Iwerks originals from a very historic film.
