Plane Crazy Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1928/29). The Mickey Mouse short Plane Crazy was first shown as a silent film to a test audience on May 15, 1928, making it technically the first Mickey Mouse cartoon release. It was co-directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. Ub reportedly worked six straight weeks on this short, with help from Hugh Harmon and Rudy Ising. Sound was later added, and it was formally released to the general public on March 17, 1929, making it the fourth Mickey Mouse sound cartoon release. This is a rare 12 field 2-peghole animation drawing of Mickey and Minnie Mouse in the airplane. Mickey asks Minnie to join him for his first flight. Our hero then falls out, leaving the plane running wild on the ground with Minnie still on board. As soon as he is back in the plane, it takes off, spiraling into the air. You can see this image around the 4:02 mark. This drawing, attributed to Ub Iwerks, is a piece of animation and Disney history. Graphite image of approximately 2" with smoke effects. The number 188 is written in the bottom right corner, with a blue number 26 stamp on the reverse. Tear and missing paper on bottom border by the pegholes, with small tears near top left and mid-right edges; none are near the image area. Minor handling and edge wear. Good condition.Auction Info
