Plane Crazy Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse Animation Drawing by Ub Iwerks (Walt Disney, 1928-29). Here is a remarkable piece of animation history: an original animation drawing from the 1928 theatrical short Plane Crazy, which marked the very first appearance of the ubiquitous Mickey Mouse. The short was co-directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks (who reportedly worked six straight weeks on this film with the help of Hugh Harmon and Rudolph Ising). Made as a silent film and given a test screening to a theater audience on 5/15/1928, Plane Crazy initially failed to pick up a distributor. Later that year, Disney released Mickey's first sound cartoon, Steamboat Willie, and it was an explosive success. Following this, Plane Crazy was released as a sound cartoon on 3/17/1929. This marvelous drawing by the hand of Mickey Mouse co-creator Ub Iwerks features an image that can be seen at the 4:06 mark of this monumental short. An image this great from this cartoon is a spectacularly rare find! Rendered in graphite on 12 field 2-peghole animation paper, the large and centered image measures 10" x 4.5". This historical artifact shows handling and edge wear with toning due to age. There is some staining along the left edge and upper right corner, and the number 298 is written in the lower right corner. Condition is Good.Auction Info
