DescriptionPinocchio Stromboli and Pinocchio Animation Drawings Group of 2 (Walt Disney, 1940).
"Your face! She will be on everybody's tongue!" Giddy over his initial success, the volatile gypsy showman counts the night's box-office earnings and informs the naïve Pinocchio of his plans. Unbeknownst to Pinocchio, the seemingly jovial new "business partner" is only seconds away from violently blowing his top - much like the Sicilian volcano for which he is named. Legendary Disney animator, Vladimir "Bill" Tytla, well-known for his uncanny ability to portray powerful and threatening characters on-screen, was entrusted with bringing this villain to terrifying life. Disney great, Milt Kahl was responsible for the final design of Pinocchio, bringing his look closer in-line with a real, human boy, and forgoing the characters colder, more geometric initial design. The film, released on 2/7/40, was Disney's second feature effort, and is considered the epitome of artistic achievement in animation, particularly its effects work. This very large image of an imposing Stromboli measures roughly 7" x 5"; Pinocchio measures roughly 3" x 3" and is stamped: "Prod. 2003 Seq. 4.4 Scene 8". Both characters are rendered in graphite and colored pencil on 12 field, 5 peghole animation paper. The Stromboli drawing is noted as C3 in the lower right and the Pinocchio drawing is noted as D 46AA in the lower right. Reinforced pegholes, age-related toning with edge wear, C3 has torn and folded corners and bottom edge. Good condition.
